Abstract

By adapting Sonallah Ibrahim’s Zaat, the eponymous TV show deeply transforms the original novel, unfolding new meanings for the viewer in the context of post-revolutionary Egypt. Through a comparative analysis of the novel and the TV show, this study intends to understand how the show offers a portrait of the Egyptian society and a portrait of a woman that are inscribed within the renewal of the political gaze Egyptian society develops on herself. Simultaneously, this gaze questions how gender relations are brought to the screen, and how they are linked to social and national issues.
