Abstract

The Apostolic Exhortation “New Hope for Lebanon” (1997), stemming from the Synod of Bishops convened by Pope John Paul II in 1995 after Lebanon’s civil war, still mirrors the reality of the Churches and the country’s politics. Despite recommendations to tackle challenges, issues persist, worsened by political and social changes. It outlines the difficulties faced by Lebanese Churches and their close ties with the country’s politics, emphasizing the urgent need for profound transformation. Collaboration among diverse Christian communities and with Muslims is crucial.
The text stresses active participation of all believers, challenging the traditional Church hierarchy for a synodal Church. However, implementing these suggestions requires a profound change in mindset, a long and challenging process. Nonetheless, glimpses of renewal emerge, such as informal ecumenical efforts, contextual theology addressing current challenges, collaborative humanitarian actions, and increased recognition of women’s roles in the Church.
