Abstract

The notion of empathy, so often used today in social psychology, has sparked an increasing interest in recent years among researchers in the field of
translation studies. In this article, we will first examine the main historical antecedents of the concept of empathy and study how it manifests itself in
translation in general and in subtitling in particular. We will then analyze how empathy, emotional intelligence, culture and translation are related as well as
the fundamental role translators play in the translating process. Finally, we will investigate empathy and the translation of nonverbal cues in films.
