Abstract

The defeat of 1967 encouraged the emergence of a generation of women behind the camera. The 1970s were also years of national liberation struggles and the outbreak of the war in Lebanon. This article first looks at how Lebanese women filmmakers took an interest in the struggles of other Arab peoples in these same years in order to defend the internationalist ideology that they assumed in their country. The repression of the struggles has, over the decades, decreased the creation of images of resistance. The insistence of past struggles has, however, left its mark on subsequent generations. In a second step, we will question the new cinematographic forms of political commitment, based on two films made in the 2010s. This back and forth from the past to the present allows us to put into dialogue two generations and two types of construction of engaged documentary that echo each other without mirroring each other.
