Abstract

At its 14th Plenary Session, held in the diocese of Chieti, Italy, 16-21 September 2016, the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church continued its study on the interrelatedness between synodality and primacy during the first millennium, the period during which East and West lived in ecclesial communion. A draft document - drawn up at the previous meeting in Amman, in 2014, was amended, completed and adopted by the Commission members, under the title: "Synodality and Primacy during the First Millennium; Towards a Common Understanding in Service to the Unity of the Church". The future task of the Commission is actually "on the basis of this common heritage" to "consider how primacy, synodality, and the interrelatedness between them can be conceived and exercised today and in the future", in view of the restoration of full communion between Catholics and Orthodox.
