Abstract

In this article the author gives a description of the theology in the sacrament of Order as defined by the Maronite Patriarch Istifan al-Douaïhy in two chapters of his Sarhu l-sartuniyya, (i.e. the explanation of the Ritual of Ordination). He makes a comparison between the Roman Scholastic teaching and the way the Patriarch explains the matter and the form applied to the Presbyteral Ordination and he underlines the double theological heritage of al-Douaïhy. One has to acknowledge that he handles the Maronite Ritual using Western methodology and Western concepts. But his liturgical reform project touches also the Oriental particularities which have their origin in the Syriac Rituals from the Syriac Fathers.
In his conclusion, the author says that al-Douaïhy has been guided by the Syriac-Antiochian Liturgy to bring something new to what he studied in Rome and to justify the difference between the two traditions, Oriental and Occidental.
