Abstract
Urban sprawl is one of Lebanon’s major environmental problems. Urban residents formed 73.5% of the Lebanese population in 2017. Nowadays, the urban front continues to extend along the Lebanese coastline, mountains, and even on the steep slopes. Although the migration to the capital started before 1975, the inhabitants of Beirut migrated during the civil war (1975-1990) towards the nearest safe areas. This situation generated an urban dynamic that lasts 30 years after the end of the war. Thus, urban sprawl is a crucial problem threatening green spaces covering a radius between 5 km to 15 km around the city of Beirut.
