Abstract
Considered as a true myth of antiquity because of its extremely rich, natural and cultural heritage, the Lebanon of today is only a shadow of what it once was. The dramatic impacts of pollution, the spread of anthropogenic landscapes, the loss of biodiversity, the deforestation and the solid waste crisis of 2015 combined with ongoing episodes of war and armed conflict, a boom in the population amplified by migratory flows of refugees, especially Syrian refugees, as well as political and economic instability have dramatically degraded its environment. Facing this devastated living environment, the awareness of the Lebanese in regard to environmental issues is progressing.
This study claims to contribute to highlighting the responsibility of private actors, in particular that of Lebanese citizens, by questioning them on their perception of the environment as well as on their environmental practices through a questionnaire survey carried out among a representative sample of 822 Lebanese citizens selected arbitrarily. A survey that is by no means exhaustive but whose purpose is to explore the degree of appropriation of Lebanese environmental values, with regard to their integration into their daily practices, and to better understand the special relationship they have with their environment.
