Résumé
L’édentement pourrait être à l’origine d'une altération de la fonction respiratoire notamment pendant le sommeil. Le but de cette revue systématique de la littérature est d’étudier la relation entre l’édentement et les apnées du sommeil. La recherche a été effectuée sur MEDLINE (PubMed), avec différentes équations booléennes. Une recherche manuelle a été également menée. 19 articles ont été retenus. 17 ont montré que l’édentement favorise la survenue des apnées obstructives du sommeil. Dans 6 études, une amélioration de l’apnée du sommeil a été notée avec le port nocturne de la prothèse, contrairement aux 4 autres études qui ont rapporté une détérioration de la qualité du sommeil avec le port de la prothèse. Une relation étroite a été prouvée entre l’apnée obstructive du sommeil et l’édentement. Cette relation a été justifiée essentiellement par les modifications anatomiques liées à la perte des dents et responsables de la réduction de l’espace rétro-pharyngé.
